Mechanical engineering of the future

Germany is one of the world's leading mechanical engineering nations. The machine tools and manufacturing and power plant equipment developed and produced here have an excellent reputation.

Mechanical engineering products range from products for everyday use, such as coffee machines, to machine tools and power generation plants, to motor vehicles and aircraft.

Mechanical engineers are shaping the technological future of human society. Core elements are the digitalization of production, automation, sustainable mobility and enabling the energy transition.

Profession & Perspectives

The job description of the engineer is characterized by a special diversity. Possible fields of work are offered by successful industrial companies, but also by public authorities and associations. Engineers design the products of the future; their daily work is characterized by a lot of communication and exciting activities in developing, testing and optimizing the various products. Engineers have detailed methodological and technical knowledge and the ability to solve problems. As a result of the growing engineering gap, the demand for engineers is enormous, and the earning potential is in the top bracket. Industrial companies in mechanical engineering offer excellent working conditions and outstanding social benefits.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree, giving you the opportunity to work directly in industry as an engineer or to pursue a master's degree at universities.

Structure

The bachelor's degree program in mechanical engineering is designed for seven semesters.

Basic studies

In the basic studies, you will develop your skills in the technical and scientific fundamentals such as computer science, mathematics, technical mechanics, machine elements and materials science for your later specialization in the main studies.

Practical semester

The 4th semester is a practical study semester in an industrial company, where you work independently on a real industrial project.

Main studies

In the main course of study, starting in the 5th semester, you will begin to specialize by choosing an in-depth field of study. In the field of study Development and Design, the focus is on the constructive area. The Engineering Design field of study focuses on the design of technical products. Numerous companies in the region are involved in fiber composites, lightweight construction and bionics, which is why the new field of study Lightweight Construction and Simulation was developed. Energy and Process Engineering deals with topics of energy generation and physical material conversion. Production and development teaches methods and processes of manufacturing technology.

Electives

From the 5th to the 7th semester, you have a wide range of elective options to deepen your knowledge and interests: 4 compulsory elective modules, 2 elective modules and 1 key competence module.

Bachelor thesis

The conclusion of your studies is your bachelor thesis, which you can write at the university or in cooperation with a company.

Abroad

You can also spend a study semester abroad - a very exciting opportunity for your personal development. You can do the practical study semester, the bachelor thesis or entire study semesters abroad.

the exact date can be found in the menu item Dates.

TO THE ONLINE APPLICATION

WHO GETS A STUDY PLACE?

The applicants with the best overall grades are admitted. In the last admission procedures, all applicants received a study place.

A preliminary internship is not required.

Special feature of the Engineering Design major:
Students in the bachelor's degree program in mechanical engineering with a major in engineering design must choose this field of study at the beginning of their first semester. This field of study starts each summer semester. Design aptitude is assessed by submitting two samples of work. In addition to the online application, you must send the two work samples (e.g. drawing, sketches) by January 15 to the Faculty Secretariat Mechanical Engineering by January 15.

The other fields of study are selected in the 4th semester.

Selection procedure - how is the overall grade calculated?

At RWU, the following rules apply to this course of study admission and selection regulations for Bachelor's programs are applied and carried out on the basis of the application documents. The preparation of a proposal list or ranking list is explained below: from the application documents, the applicant's position on a ranking list is determined according to the following procedure: Calculation of a weighted overall grade according to the formula
[(average grade of university entrance qualification)+(grades German, mathematics*2 and continued modern foreign language)/4] / 2

If there are more applicants than places, 90% of the places are awarded by the selection procedure (best overall grade) and 10% of the places are awarded by waiting period.

Improvements of the overall grade

This overall grade may be improved if one or more of the following qualifications are demonstrated:

  • Completed vocational training in metal construction, mechanical and automotive engineering, mechatronics, energy and electrical occupations, and other occupational groups as defined in the Admission and selection statutes: 0,3
  • Professional activity in the training occupation of at least 1 year: 0.1. This bonus is limited to 0.3 for 3 years of professional experience.

Extracurricular achievements, pract. Activities and recognized previous experience: 0,2 (max. 0,2)

  • Federal Volunteer Service
  • Relevant internships of more than 6 weeks duration
  • Trial studies at the RWU → Talentscanner of the RWU

MOVE-UP PROCEDURE

Prospective students often apply to several universities and study programs. As a result, study places regularly become available again because an applicant decides to take up another study place. These vacant places are then awarded to those who did not make it in the first place. Places are again awarded according to the ranking list, i.e. first to those with the best overall grade.

Further information about the application and the allocation of study places can be found in the Admissions Office.

SEMESTER FEE

Each semester , a semester fee is due for all students upon enrollment or re-registration. This fee is charged at a similar rate by all universities in Germany.

Composition and amount of the fee

FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND FOR SECOND DEGREE PROGRAMS

In Baden-Württemberg, there has been a tuition fee for international students (non-EU citizens) and a second-study fee since the winter semester 2017/2018. Thus, in some cases, a tuition fee must be paid in addition to the semester fee.

Prior to enrollment, applicants from non-EU countries or applicants for a second degree will receive a form to assess whether a tuition fee obligation actually exists.
