Mechanical engineering of the future

Germany is one of the world's leading mechanical engineering nations. The machine tools, manufacturing and power plant equipment developed and produced here have an excellent reputation.

Mechanical engineering products range from everyday products such as coffee machines, machine tools and energy generation plants to motor vehicles and aircraft.

Mechanical engineers are shaping the technological future of human society. Core elements are the digitalization of production, automation, sustainable mobility and enabling the energy transition.

Profession & prospects

The job profile of an engineer is characterized by a particular diversity. Possible fields of work are offered by successful industrial companies as well as public authorities and associations. Engineers design the products of the future; their daily work is characterized by a lot of communication and exciting activities in the development, testing and optimization of various products. Engineers have in-depth methodological and specialist knowledge and the ability to solve problems. The demand for engineers is enormous as a result of the growing engineering gap, and the earning potential is among the best. Industrial companies in the mechanical engineering sector offer excellent working conditions and outstanding social benefits.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded the title Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.), which gives you the opportunity to work directly in industry as an engineer or to obtain a Master's degree at universities.

Structure

The Bachelor's degree course in Mechanical Engineering is designed for seven semesters.

Basic studies

In the foundation course, you will develop your skills in technical and scientific fundamentals such as computer science, mathematics, technical mechanics, machine elements and materials science for your later specialization in the main course.

Practical semester

The 4th semester is a practical semester in an industrial company in which you work independently on a real industrial project.

Main studies

In the main course of study from the 5th semester onwards, you will begin to specialize by choosing an in-depth field of study. In the Development and Design field of study, the focus is on design. Production and development teaches methods and processes in production engineering.

Elective options

From the 5th to the 7th semester, you can choose from a wide range of options to deepen your knowledge and interests: 4 compulsory elective modules, 2 elective modules and 1 key competence module.

Bachelor's thesis

The final part of your studies is your Bachelor's thesis, which you can write at the university or in cooperation with a company.

Abroad

You can also spend a semester abroad - a very exciting opportunity for your personal development. You can spend the practical semester, the Bachelor's thesis or entire semesters abroad.

TO THE ONLINE APPLICATION

WHO GETS A PLACE?

The applicants with the best overall grades are admitted. In the last admission procedures, all applicants were offered a place.

A pre-study internship is not required.

Selection procedure - how is the overall grade calculated?

At RWU, this degree program is subject to the admission and selection regulations for Bachelor's degree programs is applied and carried out on the basis of the application documents. The creation of a shortlist or ranking list is explained below: The applicant's position on a ranking list is determined from the application documents according to the following procedure: Calculation of a weighted overall grade according to the formula
[(average grade of the higher education entrance qualification)+(grades German, mathematics*2 and continued modern foreign language)/4] / 2

If there are more applicants than places, 90% of the places will be allocated through the selection procedure (best overall grade) and 10% of the places will be allocated according to the waiting period.

Improvement of the overall grade

This overall grade can be improved if one or more of the following qualifications are proven:

  • Completed vocational training in metal construction, mechanical and automotive engineering, mechatronics, energy and electrical professions as well as other professional groups in accordance with the Admission and selection regulations: 0,3
  • Professional experience in the training occupation of at least 1 year: 0.1. This bonus is limited to 0.3 for 3 years of professional experience.

Extracurricular achievements, pract. Activities and recognized previous experience: 0.2 (max. 0.2)

  • Federal Voluntary Service
  • Relevant internships of more than 6 weeks duration
  • Trial studies at the RWU → Talent scanner of the RWU

SUCCESSION PROCEDURE

Prospective students often apply to several universities and degree programs. As a result, study places regularly become available again because an applicant decides to apply for a different course. These places that become available again are awarded in a succession procedure to those who did not get in first. Places are again allocated according to the ranking list, i.e. first to those with the best overall grade.

Further information on the application and allocation of places can be found at the Admissions Office.

SEMESTER FEE

Every semester, all students are required to pay a semester fee upon enrolment or re-registration. All universities in Germany charge a similar amount.

Composition and amount of the fee

FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND FOR A SECOND DEGREE COURSE

Since the winter semester 2017/2018, Baden-Württemberg has had a tuition fee for international students (non-EU citizens) and a second degree course fee. This means that in some cases a tuition fee must be paid in addition to the semester fee.

Before enrolling, applicants from non-EU countries or applicants for a second degree course will receive a form to assess whether they are actually required to pay tuition fees.
