One course, two degrees

When you try something new, you usually only know afterwards whether it has worked. Five years ago, RWU launched a new study model in the field of mechanical and automotive engineering. It combines traditional training in a partner company with a Bachelor's degree course. The first graduates have now completed this combined course of study and training. This begs the question: did the original idea work? Does the combination create added value that is greater than the sum of the parts?

"It was definitely worth it for me," says graduate Elia Spöttle, "each of the two parts is more intensive as a result. I benefit from the input from the university during my training and vice versa." With the training-integrated study option, students earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree as well as a qualification in a Chamber of Industry and Commerce apprenticeship within four and a half years.

"A bit more prepared"

One of the companies that RWU has been working with from the outset is the EBZ Group from Ravensburg. "We also actively promote this model at our job fairs," says Melina Wuhrer, HR Development Officer at the EBZ Group. "We notice that our trainees make great strides in their development during their time at RWU. But that also happens during the training phases. They settle into working life and are therefore a little more prepared for their studies."

Professor Dr. Michael Niedermeier also sees the study model as an offer that benefits everyone involved. The companies would already have the students in the company during their studies and would get highly trained people. "For its part, the university is thus very close to developments in practice. And the students receive two degrees with just one year more effort. And what you shouldn't forget: they also earn while they are studying," says the RWU study coordinator.

The first graduates remain loyal to the company where they studied. This also expresses a certain confirmation. "I've already started my part-time Master's degree at RWU," says Ralf Ziemann. "I've taken the model to the next level, so to speak."
