Five steps to the application
You have made up your mind and want to apply for one or more degree programs at RWU. Here we show you how to apply in five easy steps. We recommend that you start your application early so that you have enough time to submit your application completely and on time.
1. registration on hochschulstart.de
When applying for the first semester of the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree programs, the first thing to do is to register at Hochschulstart is required. These study places are allocated via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) on Hochschulstart.de.
During registration, a BID and BAN number is assigned. Since these numbers will be needed at a later date and possibly also for applications to other universities, it is important to make a note of them.
For applications to higher semesters or for applications to our Master's programs or Bachelor's programs with open admission, registration at Hochschulstart is notrequired.
2. registration in the RWU application portal
Next is the registration in the RWU application portal is required. When applying for a degree program that participates in the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure(DoSV), the BID and BAN are requested in the RWU application portal. However, this information can also be provided at a later date. Further instructions for registration can be found in the portal.
After registration, the user ID will be sent by e-mail. Applicants can use this to log in to the RWU application portal and process the application.
3. fill out and submit application form
After successfully logging in to the RWU application portal the application can be started. Documents such as the university entrance qualification (HZB) are required for the application and should be kept ready for upload.
After the online application has been successfully completed, the final step is tosubmit the application electronically.
4. prioritization of applications via Hochschulstart
This step is only required when applying for multiple degree programs that are awarded via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). In this case, after applying in the RWU Portal, the applications must be submitted on Hochschulstart be prioritized.
When receiving multiple admission offers, applications with admission offers that have been prioritized low are automatically eliminated.
Steps for prioritization:
- Log on to www.hochschulstart.de
- Menu item "My applications
- Execute function "Prioritize applications" (below the table)
- Save
The prioritization is only visible on Hochschulstart and not in the RWU application portal.
5. check application status
The current application status can be viewed at any time in the RWU application portal at any time. Our Admissions Office will process incoming applications as quickly as possible. If the application is valid, applicants will automatically participate in the selection process which starts after the application deadline. In the case of open-admission programs, offers of admission are made on a continuous basis, even before the application deadline.
Those who are admitted receive an offer of admission. If the applicant wishes to accept the place, the next step is the Enrollment at RWU.
If no offer of admission can be made by the end of the admission process, applicants will receive a notice of rejection. A notice of exclusion is issued if the application documents have not been received in full or are not valid for the selection process.

Selection procedure
Admission requirements and selection procedure
What requirements are to be met for my desired degree program?
The decision as to whether applicants are accepted into to a degree program depends on the, so-called, procedural grade. Most Bachelor's degree programs are made up by the grades of the university entrance qualification in German, mathematics and an additional language skill, as well as the overall average grade. Further qualifications and activities, such as voluntary service or internships, can improve the grade procedure.
What can I get credit for?
In addition to academic achievement, extracurricular activities may lead to an improvement in the admission grade.
Recognized achievements may include:
- The course of study Media Design offers a voluntary Homework Assignment to improve the admission grade by up to 1.5 grades
- Participation in the trial study Talent scanner at the RWU
- Voluntary service (voluntary social year, federal voluntary service, voluntary military service)
- International voluntary services (e.g. in development aid, stays abroad in the service of an NGO)
- Social commitment (e.g. volunteer fire department, technical relief organization)
- Completed relevant internships
- School prizes and successful participation in competitions (e.g. "Jugend Forscht" competition for young researchers, national mathematics competition, programming competition)
- Tutoring in the context of employment with a tutoring organization or in a public institution
- Education of own children
Which activities are recognized and how they are weighted differs depending on the study program. A detailed list can be found in the admission statutes of the bachelor's and master's degree programs. The current version is available on the website of the Admissions Office in the download area.
Waiting semester
Each semester that one was not enrolled at a German educational institution after obtaining the university entrance qualification is considered a waiting semester. A calendar year comprises two semesters - the summer and winter semesters. In addition to the numerus clausus and the Abitur grade, the number of waiting semesters is another factor that plays a role in the allocation of university places. At German universities, there is always a separate contingent of free study places, which is allocated via the waiting semesters. In courses with restricted admissions, around 20 percent of all places are awarded to applicants with a long waiting period. Waiting semesters are therefore particularly helpful for school leavers who do not have an outstanding Abitur.
Study and competitive sports
Since top athletes are often location-bound, there is a special quota when applying for a restricted-admission degree program. To be eligible for this special quota, applicants must prove that they:
- belong to an Olympic, perspective, supplementary or team sports squad or junior squad formed at the federal level by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, or
- are anelected member of a local political body with a general political mandate (no interest groups, etc.) and for this reason are bound to the place of study.
Proof is provided in the form of a letter from the respective sports federation/club and is enclosed with the application together with an informal letter. In addition, the option is selected in the RWU application portal under the item "Reasons for hardship application".

FAQ Enrollment
Insurance
Health insurance
A health insurance certificate is required for enrollment. Students enrolled at state or state-recognized universities in Germany are subject to compulsory insurance.
For enrollment, the health insurance company provide the insurance status electronically to the university (know as M10). Please ask your health insurance company for this notification.
Students with private health insurance require a certificate of exemption from compulsory health insurance. This is sent electronically to the university by the statutory health insurance companies (M10). Please contact a statutory health insurance company for this.
Ravensburg-Weingarten University's dispatch number: H0002749 (to be provided to the health insurance company).
Student health insurance
Up to and including the age of 25, students can be co-insured with their legally insured parents, guardians or spouse. This means that students do not have to pay their own contributions to the health insurance fund. The statutory health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.
If family insurance is not an option, it is possible to have student health insurance till the age of 30 . The statutory health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.
After age 30, student health insurance is no longer available. Insurance is now either voluntary or private. It should be noted that insurance contributions are higher. The public health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.
After studies
If you interrupt your studies, e.g. due to an internship semester, your insurance status may change and thus your contribution rates may change. For clarification of the insurance status, your health insurance company will provide information.
Health insurance relationships change as soon as the student status ceases. In the case of de-registration, the statutory health insurance companies are automatically informed by the university. In the case of private health insurance companies, this must be done by the student him/herself.
It is possible that higher contributions for your health insurance will have to be paid after de-registration or that the entitlement to family insurance will be forfeited.
If you have any further questions with regards to insurance, please direct them to the respective health insurance company.
