Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences is 60 years old. The celebration of this anniversary in Mensapark was also the starting signal for the RWU-Mobile: Until mid-July, RWU will be on the road at marketplaces and festivals, in schoolyards and at the State Garden Show, making the university a mobile experience.
The Rector of RWU, Professor Dr. Thomas Spägele, welcomed around 120 guests in the open air and in perfect weather. "In 1964, the State School of Engineering in Ravensburg saw the light of day with just two degree courses: Mechanical Engineering and Physical Engineering," Thomas Spägele began an interesting look back. In 1971, the engineering school became the University of Applied Sciences and in 1982 it moved to Weingarten with around 870 students. Hence the name at the time: FH Ravensburg-Weingarten. Today there are around 3,500 students on over 30 degree degree programms.
Internationally oriented and regionally rooted
In 2005, as part of the Bologna Process, the diploma became bachelor's and master's degrees. Since 2019, the university has been called RWU, after the abbreviation of its English name Ravensburg-Weingarten University, thus expressing its international orientation. Around 20 percent of the students come from abroad. The abbreviation with the three letters is supplemented in the logo by a lion, which, as the heraldic animal of the city of Weingarten, the district of Ravensburg and the state of Baden-Württemberg, symbolizes the university's strong regional roots as well as its internationality.
After looking back on 60 years of university history, the Rector turned his attention to the future. "We will have to continue to change in order to meet the ever-changing challenges," said Thomas Spägele, combining this outlook with thanks. "It is our teaching staff and students, it is our employees who contribute every day to making RWU such an attractive place to study and work."
"This is good for our city"
Following his congratulations on the sixtieth anniversary, the Lord Mayor also spoke about the innovative potential that the universities represent for Weingarten. "The many young people and the many ideas that are created here are good for our city," said Clemens Moll.
With relaxed, jazzy music, supported by the RWU Friends' Association and catered by the Seezeit Student Union, the university then celebrated its milestone birthday in the Mensapark. In addition to purple pavilions and deckchairs, a van in RWU design was also parked. "Over the next six weeks, we will be out and about in the region with this RWU-Mobile, in Weingarten and Ravensburg, in Wangen, at the State Garden Show and in many school playgrounds," announced Christoph Oldenkotte and Hannes Gilch from RWU's public relations department.
RWU will be present at each of these locations with different content formats, with workshops and lectures, discussions and cultural contributions. It will be about the psychology of purchasing decisions, electromobility, financial empowerment for women or 3D printing from recycled plastic, to name just a few examples. In any case, the RWU-Mobil offers the perfect opportunity to get to know the university and its research topics in an open atmosphere.
