It has recently become available in all popular play and app stores: The new RWU app. Especially for new students starting their studies in the winter semester, the app is intended to function as a kind of guide containing all the important information. The app gives users access to all important information about RWU. If desired, this access can also be personalized, for example adapted to their own studies. In addition to the current canteen plan, the app also contains a map, the latest news from the RWU website, the calendar of events and a "guide" to all relevant links relating to student life at RWU.

Secure and data protection compliant

The initial idea for the app was born back in 2021, and development has been steadily progressing over the past four years in close cooperation with the Computing Center. The two students Paul Spieß and Leon Baumann from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science were in charge of the implementation. They were supported by Professor Jürgen Graef from the Media Design course. "Our original app was quite outdated and impractical. That's how the idea for a new app came about," says Leon Baumann.

"The team quickly came together," reports Jürgen Graef looking back. The three of them divided up the work on the app. "For example, I did a lot of work on the server side," says Paul Spieß. "During development, particular attention was paid to the security concept and the implementation and guarantee of data protection." The effort was worth it. Student data can now be accessed in the new app without any security concerns for users.

Functions and future of the app

"The integrated map offers particular added value, especially for new students at RWU," says Leon Baumann. "You can even display an exact route to the individual buildings." And Paul adds: "The push notifications are also very practical, for example when new grades are entered."

Jürgen Graef will ensure the long-term existence and ongoing work on the app. "Because we want to integrate a few more functions into the app in the future. The possibility of real-time communication, for example in the form of an alarm, could be very useful. As could the more prominent presentation of university dates and events." Ultimately, the app should become a practical companion for everyday life at RWU, especially for students, but also for staff and lecturers.
